Aided by medical professionals who subscribed to theories of eugenics, Nazi officials declared persons with perceived or actual mental and/or physical disabilities as “life unworthy of life” (lebensunwertes Leben). These individuals were targeted for both state-sanctioned and decentralized euthanasia programs, under which an estimated 200,000 perished. Some of the physicians who participated in the official state euthanasia program, known euphemistically as T4, were central to the development of technologies used to murder other groups in concentration and extermination camps.

A brick smashing through the bedroom window jolted nine-year-old Susan Warsinger awake on the night of November 9, 1938. As her brother Joseph peered out the window, he turned and said, “Susi, it is our neighbors!” That night of orchestrated violence against Jews—known as Kristallnact (or “Night of Broken Glass”)—changed their lives forever. Susan’s parents used their life savings to smuggle the children out of Nazi Germany—sending them to live in France.

Senate Bill 1828 charges the Texas Holocaust, Genocide, and Antisemitism Advisory Commission with developing or approving materials for a statewide Holocaust Remembrance Week. Provided is information on best practices and various lists of approved resources.
