Lecture presented by Marc Masurovsky, who co-founded the Holocaust Art Restitution Project (HARP) in September 1997 and served as its Director of Research. Since 1980 he has examined the general question of assets looted during the Nazi era. He worked as an expert historian on a class-action lawsuit filed by Jewish claimants against three leading Swiss banks, accusing them of having expropriated the property that their families had deposited in their safes and bank accounts.

Schmuel Lewent survived the Lodz Ghetto only to be transported to the infamous Auschwitz death camp with his wife and 2-month-old baby child. The child didn’t survive the trip and at selection, his wife was sent to the gas chamber. Schmuel was condemned to slave labor at Auschwitz where he toiled for over three years. Schmuel’s survival is miraculous and the story an inspiration. Learn more of Schmuel’s story and his strength to survive Auschwitz concentration camp shared by his son, Russell Kassman, on February 9, 2025 at 2pm.

This talk examines the strategies of concealment described in the USC Shoah Foundation testimonies of Jewish refugees who made the journey to Japan to escape Nazi persecution in the early 1940s. The testimonies discuss acts of self-concealment—through religion, occupation, or name—as well as the hiding of physical objects, such as jewelry, money, gold, and essential paperwork.

Ascher survived the Shoah from 1942, finding refuge in a cellar in Berlin-Grunewald. During these harrowing and isolating years, he composed poetry. Post-1945, Ascher developed a distinctive artistic style, drawing inspiration from the nearby Grunewald, focusing on landscapes while remaining faithful to his expressionist visual language. He lived a reclusive life until his passing on March 26, 1970.
