A Special Event for International Holocaust Remembrance Day In 1945, a few months after his release from Auschwitz, Yechiel De-Nur, still in his striped jacket, sat down and started writing. After two weeks, he was reborn as Ka-Tzetnik, “the man from the camps.” The books that he wrote were translated into 32 languages and sold millions, while the author himself hid behind the pseudonym Ka-Tzetnik.

Lecture presented by Marc Masurovsky, who co-founded the Holocaust Art Restitution Project (HARP) in September 1997 and served as its Director of Research. Since 1980 he has examined the general question of assets looted during the Nazi era. He worked as an expert historian on a class-action lawsuit filed by Jewish claimants against three leading Swiss banks, accusing them of having expropriated the property that their families had deposited in their safes and bank accounts.

Schmuel Lewent survived the Lodz Ghetto only to be transported to the infamous Auschwitz death camp with his wife and 2-month-old baby child. The child didn’t survive the trip and at selection, his wife was sent to the gas chamber. Schmuel was condemned to slave labor at Auschwitz where he toiled for over three years. Schmuel’s survival is miraculous and the story an inspiration. Learn more of Schmuel’s story and his strength to survive Auschwitz concentration camp shared by his son, Russell Kassman, on February 9, 2025 at 2pm.
