Though the medical profession is built on the sacred relationship between doctor and patient, traditional notions of medical ethics gave way to dangerous ideology during the Holocaust. The active participation of the medical and scientific communities in the labeling, persecution and eventual mass murder of millions deemed "unfit" is what sets the Holocaust apart as the only example of medically sanctioned genocide in history.
