| Details | Eva Fleischner was a well-regarded scholar of women in the Holocaust and Jewish-Christian relations, as well as, a close associate of the National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education. Much of her research focused on the sacrifices made rescuers; she used the term "memory of goodness" in a book about the experiences of survivors. At the same time, her work wrestled with the darker elements of human behavior that the Holocaust revealed. Dr. Roth's presentation will explore these dual aspects of Eva Fleischner's contributions while also paying tribute to her life. Her life and work, Roth contends, were devoted to reminding us that goodness is, what the forces are that threaten it, and the means by which we might resist those threats. John K. Roth is the Edward J. Sexton Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and the Founding Director of the Center for the Study of the Holocaust , Genocide, and Human Rights at Claremont McKenna College. He has published hundreds of articles and reviews and authored or edited more than 50 books, including: Ethics During and After the Holocaust Studies: In the Shadow of Birkenau; The Oxford Handbook of Holocaust Studies; The Failures of Ethics: Confronting the Holocaust, Genocide, and Other Mass Atrocities; and Sources of Holocaust Insight: Learning and Teaching About the Genocide. Register here. The National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education (NCCHE) makes scholarship on the Holocaust and other acts of genocide accessible to educators at every level. Seton Hill established this Center on its campus in 1987. The university initiated this national Catholic movement toward Holocaust studies in response to the urging of Pope John Paul II to recognize the significance of the Shoah, the Holocaust, and to “promote the necessary historical and religious studies on this event which concerns the whole of humanity today” (Letter to Archbishop John L. May, 1987). |
