2026 Mittelman-Berman Holocaust Education Series | DHHRM

Beneath the soil of the death camp at Treblinka, traces of the past remain. From July 1942 through September 1943, Nazi officials murdered an estimated 925,000 Jews and an unknown number of Poles, Roma, and Soviets at Treblinka. In the fall of 1943, following an uprising at the camp, Treblinka was liquidated, and camp personnel erased crimes committed there from the landscape. Through noninvasive forensic archaeological investigations using ground-penetrating radar, Professor Caroline Sturdy Colls has helped discover new evidence of Treblinka’s operations while preserving the dignity and memory of its victims in accordance with Jewish burial law. She joins DHHRM to uncover what this material evidence reveals about how genocide inscribes itself into the land, and how, with the right tools, we can still read it.

About the Speaker

Caroline Sturdy Colls, Ph.D., is a professor of Holocaust archaeology and genocide investigation, and director of the Centre of Archaeology at the University of Huddersfield in England. Sturdy Colls has overseen archaeological surveys at more than 60 Holocaust sites across Europe, and she has undertaken research related to genocide and mass violence in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Namibia, Colombia, and Cyprus. Her book Finding Treblinka: Forensic and Archaeological Perspectives, released in July 2026, outlines the results of her investigations at the death camp at Treblinka. In 2025-2026, she was the Ina Levine Invitational Scholarin- Residence at the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
