Kinder Doll: A Kindertransport StoryThe story is based on the Kindertransport rescue effort during World War II, which enabled thousands of unaccompanied children to travel from Nazi-occupied Europe to the United Kingdom. It follows two fictional children, Otto and Edith, who board a train to Britain with their most prized possessions — a teddy bear and a doll.Six students — one of whom is now an alum — in the Bass School animated the film, set to debut at UT Dallas’ celebration of International Animation Day on Oct. 28.The project was led by Dr. Christine Veras, assistant professor of arts, technology and emerging communication and director of the experimenta.l. Animation Lab, in partnership with the Ackerman Center for Holocaust Studies. The film’s debut coincides with an exhibit at the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum, honoring the rescue of 10,000 Jewish children and the lasting legacy of the Kindertransport, when the UK accepted refugee children escaping the Holocaust.Runtime: 7 minutes

Description:
Natan Sharansky is a renowned human rights activist, former Soviet dissident, and Israeli statesman. Imprisoned for nine years in the Soviet Gulags for his advocacy for the right of Soviet Jews to immigrate to Israel, he became a symbol of resistance to oppression. Released in 1986 following an international campaign for his freedom, Sharansky immediately immigrated to Israel and worked to accelerate the integration of Russian Jews, founding the Zionist Forum, and establishing the Yisrael B’Aliyah party. He served in four governments as minister and deputy prime minister. He has received numerous honors, including the Israel Prize, the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor. Sharansky served as Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel, now chairs ISGAP (Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism & Policy), and is the author of four books. He continues to champion the right to freedom for people around the world.

Promote student understanding using artifacts from the Museum’s collection
At this free online event, learn how historians work as investigators to examine evidence and reconstruct the stories of people murdered by the Nazis. Explore how letters, documents, photographs, and other artifacts preserve personal experiences for generations to come.
Gain instructional strategies for analyzing primary sources using the Museum’s classroom-ready resources. Panelists will model approaches that place evidence into historical context, guiding students to think critically about how and why the Holocaust happened and its impact on individuals.

Model instructional strategies, including primary source and text analysis, to build historical thinking skills and enhance student literacy.Share classroom-ready resources designed to strengthen student knowledge across various disciplines and grade levels.

The program will examine classroom-ready resources, including primary sources from the Museum’s collection and short animated videos. A free book that complements the program will be mailed directly to participants (available for current educators with a US mailing address) after the event.
