Description:
Although Jews and Christians share common books—the Jewish Tanakh and the Christian Old Testament—differences in translation, punctuation, definitions, theology, emphasis, and even canonical order all lead to differences in community self-definition. What prompts these differences, and what do they suggest about Jewish and Christian priorities? Among the items to be discussed: the "virgin birth," the "suffering servant," creation and the Garden of Eden, the role of Torah, and the importance of canons within canons.Amy-Jill Levine is University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies and Mary Jane Werthan Professor of Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School and Program in Jewish Studies. Her thirty books include The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus; Short Stories by Jesus; The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi; four children's books (with Sandy Sasso); The Gospel of Luke (with Ben Witherington III); and the Jewish Annotated New Testament (co-edited with Marc Z. Brettler). In 2019, she became the first Jew to teach New Testament at Rome's Pontifical Biblical Institute.Tickets for the event.

Description:
This year's theme is Texas Survivors. Survivors of the Holocaust and modern genocides have attempted to convey their experiences to others, especially the younger generations that represent the future. By engaging survivors' personal testimonies, Texas students can assume the role of witness and use their knowledge to improve the world in which we live.
Each submission must be accompanied by the electronic application, parent/guardian permission form, and honesty clause form.
All entries are due by 4:00 PM CST on Friday, February 28, 2020.
The contest results will be announced in April 2020, to commemorate Genocide Awareness and Prevention Month. Each middle school winner will receive a monetary award of $250, and each high school winner will receive a monetary award of $500, generously funded by Friends of the Texas Holocaust, Genocide, and Antisemitism Advisory Committee.
