Echoes & Reflections | Examining the Holocaust and World War II: Teaching with The U.S. and the Holocaust, a film by Ken Burns, Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein, October 2025   View Event

  • Description:  Participate in this asynchronous online course for a guided, facilitator-led exploration of resources centered around clips from The U.S. and the Holocaust, a film by Ken Burns, Lynn Novick & Sarah Botstein, that support teaching about the intersections of the Holocaust and World War II. Participants will explore topics such as antisemitism, immigration, xenophobia and the Final Solution. This course was developed in collaboration with Echoes & Reflections, Florentine Films, PBS LearningMedia and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. We applaud your commitment to teaching this topic and are eager to support you to ensure your students are able to engage in thoughtful, engaging, and historically accurate learning. This course is appropriate for secondary educators teaching European, World and US history as well as other disciplines where the Holocaust is addressed. Course Details Program includes three interactive modules; approximately 6 hours to complete in total – at no costProgram includes a ready-to-use lesson plan that incorporates film clips from The U.S. and the HolocaustParticipants proceed at their own pace each week, are supported by an instructor, and enjoy asynchronous interaction with other educatorsEducators complete all three modules for a 6-hour certificateGraduate credit available through the University of the Pacific. Echoes & Reflections | Living Links: Bringing Intergenerational Holocaust Stories Into Your Classroom   View Event

  • Description:  Our webinars are designed to increase participants’ knowledge of Holocaust history, explore and access classroom-ready content, and support instructional practice to promote student learning and understanding of this complex history and its lasting effect on the world. Survivor testimony is an important way to connecting your students to the human story of the Holocaust, but today, there are limited opportunities to interact in person with survivors. In this webinar, you'll learn how to engage with Living Links, a program supported by USC Shoah Foundation, that brings third-generation Holocaust descendants into classrooms to share their families' stories of survival, loss, and resilience. Amy Haddad, Living Links Director of Operations, and Dave Reckess, 3GNY Executive Director, will discuss how Living Links speakers and intergenerational stories make the Holocaust relative and resonant with students and the world today, and share some of their families’ histories about the Holocaust and its legacy.   • Description:  Join UT Dallas for a moving conversation with Elizabeth Bellak (Renia Spiegel's sister) and Alexandra Bellak (Renia's niece), as they reflect on the life and diary of Renia Spiegel, often called the “Polish Anne Frank.” Written during the German occupation of Poland, Renia’s Diary captures the hopes, fears, and resilience of a young girl whose voice was silenced during the Holocaust. Elizabeth and Alexandra will share intimate family memories, the story of the diary’s rediscovery and publication, and the ongoing responsibility of preserving Renia’s legacy for future generations. Echoes & Reflections | Becoming Evil: How Ordinary People Commit Genocide and Mass Killing   View Event

  • Description:  At its heart, genocide happens because individual humans choose to kill other individual humans in large numbers and over an extended period of time. Who are the killers and how do they come to do such extraordinary evil? Based on interviews with over 225 rank-and-file perpetrators, this presentation will focus on the ordinary origins of these killers and the processes by which they become capable of such atrocities, an understanding vital to resolving current conflicts as well as preventing the future occurrence of genocide.
