Description:
The Texas Holocaust, Genocide, and Antisemitism Advisory Commission (THGAAC) is holding its quarterly meeting on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2025 beginning at 8:30AM. Every quarter the THGAAC holds a meeting, open to the public, in order to review its current projects and initiatives. The Commission invites any member of the public who might be interested in its mission to this meeting.
Members of the public will have access and a means to participate in this meeting, by two-way audio/video, by connecting to the video access number identified below, by attending the meeting in person, or by clicking on the link contained on the agency website's event calendar. The video access number contained in this notice is subject to change by the conference provider at any time. Members of the public are encouraged to confirm the correct conference access number/link 24 hours before the meeting by going to the agency website. An electronic copy of the agenda is available here. A recording of the meeting will be available after September 3, 2025. To obtain a recording, please contact Joy Nathan, at 512.463.8815 or via e-mail.
For public participants, after the meeting convenes, the presiding officer will call roll of board members and then of public attendees. Please identify yourself by name and state whether you would like to provide public comment. You may also e-mail Joy Nathan in advance of the meeting if you would like to provide public comment. When the Commission reaches the public comment portion of the meeting, the presiding officer will recognize you by name and give you an opportunity to speak. All public comments will be limited to three (3) minutes. All virtual participants are asked to keep their microphones muted when they are not providing public comment.

Since the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, communities worldwide have seen a rise in extremist radicalization and experienced a surge in antisemitic rhetoric and violence.
This presentation offers an in-depth overview of that global event—told from the perspective of an FBI agent who was living and working in Israel at the time—and examines the growing trend of antisemitism that has emerged in its aftermath.

David Zimmermann recently retired from the FBI after working 25+ years in the counterterrorism arena, both domestically and abroad. Zimmermann’s last tour was in Tel Aviv as a Supervisory Special Agent from 2020 to 2024. After the October 7, 2023, Hamas massacre, Zimmermann led the FBI’s Israel-based wartime efforts to seek the release/return of over 250 innocent hostages held by Hamas terrorists. In January 2025, Zimmermann joined George Washington University’s Program on Extremism as a Senior Research Fellow.

Join the University of Texas at Dallas on Monday, September 8th for an evening you won't want to miss. Triumph of the Heart is a feature film about St. Maximilian Kolbe and his companions’ triumph over death.
The Ackerman Center and the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology at UT Dallas are proud to be hosting the red-carpet film premiere of this extraordinary true story of St. Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish Catholic priest who volunteered to die in place of another at Auschwitz.
The evening will begin with a Red Carpet experience for our VIP guests, followed by the premiere of the film, some words from the director, and a reception.

Description:
Abe Piasek was 13 years old in 1942 when he was taken from his family in Poland – he never saw his parents or his little sister again. He spent the next three years forced to work in slave labor camps. Liberated in 1945, Abe was 16 ½ years old and weighed just 75 pounds. Steve Goldberg, a history teacher for more than 20 years, befriended Abe during the last year of Abe's life. Three days before he passed away at age 91, Abe asked Steve to "keep telling my story," a promise Steve has taken very seriously. Hear him tell Abe's story through curated video clips of Abe’s public speeches, as well as personal interviews.

At just nine, Jeanne Celestine Lakin was thrust into the horrors of the Rwandan Genocide Against the Tutsis, fleeing violent militias with her siblings and forced to survive in the wilderness. Despite the brutality and the tragic loss of her family, she discovered a wellspring of inner strength that led her to a path of resilience, education, and advocacy.
Today, Lakin has been appointed Chairwoman for the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights International Survivors of Trafficking Advisory Council, acting as a formidable force against global human trafficking. Her contributions have influenced high-level United Nations events, furthering the cause of justice on an international stage. Passionate about helping disadvantaged children, Lakin also established the nonprofit One Million Orphans, providing sustainable educational support to some of the most vulnerable children across the globe.Tickets

As the mother of two university students, Miriam has been actively involved in Jewish campus life across various universities. In response to the events of October 7, 2023, Miriam became aware of Mothers Against College Antisemitism (MACA), a grassroots movement that has evolved into a nationwide nonprofit organization dedicated to combating antisemitism on college campuses. Miriam is one of the founding members of the DFW MACA chapter, established in December 2024. This chapter has grown to include 90 members who are committed to protecting and advocating for Jewish students in North Texas universities.

Miriam Zivin was born in Canada and has spent significant portions of her life in Texas and Israel. After completing the last two years of high school in Israel, she volunteered and served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Miriam earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Arizona in 1998, and in 2000 she obtained a master’s degree in early childhood special education from the University of Texas at Austin.
With a passion for education, Miriam taught special education for 11 years and Hebrew language at Akiba Academy in Dallas, Texas, for six years. Additionally, she is a licensed educational diagnostician.
As the mother of two university students, she has been actively involved in Jewish campus life across various universities. In response to the events of October 7, 2023, Miriam became aware of Mothers Against College Antisemitism (MACA), a grassroots movement that has evolved into a nationwide nonprofit organization dedicated to combating antisemitism on college campuses.
Recognizing the importance of this mission, she became one of the founding members of the DFW MACA chapter, established in December 2024. This chapter has grown to include 90 members who are committed to protecting and advocating for Jewish students in North Texas universities. The members of this group meet monthly, both in person and online, to strategize and implement initiatives that support Jewish life on university campuses.
Miriam is dedicated to fostering a supportive environment for Jewish students and combating antisemitism, making significant contributions to the community through her work with MACA and beyond.
Miriam is married to Mitchell Zivin, and is the mother of Ben (20) and Ella (18), both students at the University of Oklahoma.
