Description:
Through the life histories of five Jewish people--a merchant, a homemaker, a real estate broker, and two teenagers--who bravely resisted persecution and defended themselves in Nazi Germany, Wolf Gruner's new book, "Resisters: How Ordinary Jews Fought Persecution in Hitler's Germany," upends the common notion of passive Jews in Hitler's Germany. The book draws on twelve years of research and expands the concept of resistance, challenging the misconception that Jews were passive.During this webinar, Gruner discusses the inspiration, the contents, and purpose of his book. Echoes & Reflections Unit VII: "Jewish Resistance" is also covered to broaden student understanding and perspective of resistance efforts made by some Jews during the Holocaust. This webinar connects to the Jewish Resistance lesson plan on the Echoes & Reflections website.

Description:
How was resistance possible in the horrific conditions of the Theresienstadt ghetto? In commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, please join Sheryl Ochayon, Project Director of Echoes from Yad Vashem, to hear the incredible story of Petr Ginz and other imprisoned teenagers who refused to be vanquished. They managed to compose poetry, write, draw, and create magazines, all in secret. Petr's drawing of the moon even made it into outer space, symbolizing the heights the human spirit can reach. This webinar is intended for students to view with their teachers and connects with the Prewar Jewish Life and Resistance lesson plans on the Echoes & Reflections website, and will be the subject of a new Echoes podcast for students.
