Often referred to as the first genocide of the twentieth century, the Armenian Genocide was marked by the systematic persecution, deportation, and mass murder, under the cover of World War I, of approximately 1 million Armenian Christians living in the Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1923. Most of the Ottoman Turkish officials who organized and helped perpetrate the genocide escaped prosecution. To this day, the Turkish government denies any role in the genocide and refuses to acknowledge that a genocide occurred. Historians from the Genocide Education Project join us to recount the experiences of those murdered, shed light on the motives of the perpetrators, and discuss efforts to memorialize the victims.

Description:
In recognition of Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), Lucy Taus Katz along with Congregation Havurah Shalom of Sun City, Texas and in partnership with the Georgetown Public Library have created a thought-provoking and inspiring program titled “The Heroes of a Hidden Child: One Survivor’s Story of Gratitude" This program will take place at The Georgetown Public Library’s Hewlett Room, located at 402 West 8th Street in Georgetown, Texas on Sunday, April 27th 2025 from 3-5pm. The event is FREE and all are welcome.
Lucy Taus Katz’s life is a story of survival against impossible odds. Born into a Jewish family in Nazi-occupied Europe, Lucy was just an infant when her family faced the horrors of the Holocaust. While much of her large extended family perished, Lucy’s life was spared through the extraordinary acts of kindness and bravery of strangers. These individuals risked their own lives—and those of their families—to protect a child they had never met, embodying humanity at its most courageous.
Lucy reflects on the selflessness of those who saved her and the profound lessons she carries forward. Her message is both timeless and urgent:•Courage: Rising above even the most difficult circumstances.•Hope: Believing in justice and taking action to ensure it prevails.•Acceptance: Rejecting hate and embracing love, understanding, and the uniqueness of others.•Action: Choosing to be “upstanders” who stand against injustice rather than passive bystanders.
Presented by Lucy Taus Katz herself, this program promises a unique insight into the extraordinary acts of courage, resilience, and humanity that persisted amidst one of history’s darkest periods. Through her words, Lucy emphasizes the power of kindness, forgiveness, and resilience to heal and transform individuals and communities. She reminds us that we all have the ability to make a difference, one person at a time, in repairing the world.
Lucy, now a Commissioner for the Texas Holocaust, Genocide, and Antisemitism Advisory Commission, has dedicated her life to educating others about the Holocaust, the perils of antisemitism, and the power of kindness and forgiveness. She continues to share her story to inspire others to build a world of understanding and compassion.
This free public event is an opportunity to learn from Lucy’s remarkable journey and reflect on our collective responsibility to stand against hate and injustice.
Lucy Taus Katz is a Holocaust survivor, educator, and advocate for social justice. Despite a busy career in home building and remodeling, Lucy has always been dedicated to Holocaust education and fostering understanding between communities. She has chaired numerous Yom HaShoah programs, bringing Jewish and non-Jewish communities together, and is a founding member of The Descendants of Holocaust Survivors in Central Texas.
Since her teenage years, Lucy has shared her remarkable journey to educate and inspire others. Lucy works tirelessly to combat antisemitism and promote understanding. Her message of courage, hope, acceptance, and action inspires people of all ages to become agents of positive change.
While she was raised in Philadelphia and attended Temple University, Lucy now resides in Austin, Texas, with her husband Joel. They have two sons, and Lucy cherishes her role as “Bubbie” to seven grandchildren.
Congregation Havurah Shalom of Sun City, Texas, a non-profit 501C3 organization was founded in 1996 when the first Jewish residents of Sun City came together to share their religious and cultural heritage. Congregation Havurah Shalom is dedicated to serving the spiritual, educational, cultural, civic and social needs of its members in an egalitarian environment framed by Jewish tradition and in an atmosphere of joy and mutual caring.

Description:
On this live-streamed walking tour, we will explore the history of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the context in which it took place. Beginning on April 19, 1943, the Uprising was the largest act of military resistance undertaken by Jews during World War II and marked the first significant civic uprising in occupied Europe. We’ll visit key sites related to the Uprising, including the locations where intense battles took place and where Jewish fighters made their stand. Along the way, you’ll hear powerful stories of the bravery and determination of the Jewish resistance fighters who, against overwhelming odds, fought for their freedom and dignity against the Nazi forces. This tour will shed light on their extraordinary courage and the lasting impact of their resistance. Co-presented with Wowzitude.
