  • Description:  Join Rabbi Jonty Blackman, a renowned educator and storyteller with a deep understanding of Jewish history and the Holocaust. Facilitated by Rabbi Blackman, this virtual event offers a poignant opportunity to honor the lives lost on October 7th, 2023. Through compelling narratives and insightful reflections, we will commemorate the victims, explore themes of resilience, and contemplate the enduring lessons of this tragic day. Jonty has led many seminars and missions in Poland and Israel and is a gifted educator and a fascinating storyteller. Jonty has a unique way of connecting his teachings to his audience, such that their experience of learning leaves a deep and enduring impact on their lives. He weaves together Jewish history with philosophy, culture with archaeology, and the tragedy of the Holocaust with probing, source-based theological questions. His intricate knowledge of Jewish history and the Holocaust, combined with his analytical and sensitive approach to challenging philosophical questions offers students a profound educational experience.   • Description:  In the midst of the Unite the Right Rally aftermath and the meteoric rise of White Nationalist figure Richard Spencer, a Jewish mother from Whitefish, Montana finds herself and her family targeted by a Neo-Nazi troll storm. In the face of an alarming growth of American fascism, Tanya Gersh finds solidarity with her community by standing up, fighting back and ultimately filing a landmark case for the First Amendment, setting a precedent that could shape America’s future, and the fight against hatred in a digital age. HMH | Holocaust Survivor Talk featuring Commissioner Lucy Katz   View Event

  • Description:  As a high school student in Philadelphia, Lucy Taus Katz became a voice for the six million Jews who were murdered during the Holocaust. When Lucy’s English teacher encouraged her to enter an essay competition entitled “Why I Am Proud to Be an American,” she wrote about her experience as a Hidden Child during the Nazi occupation in Poland. Since that time, Lucy has been speaking throughout the country at middle schools, high schools, universities, and military bases. Her mission is to educate students, their parents, and the greater community about the Holocaust and genocide. She strives to inspire everyone with a sense of responsibility to uphold human value and to prevent future atrocities. Although busy with a career in home building and remodeling, in years past Lucy has chaired numerous Yom HaShoah programs, bringing the Jewish and non-Jewish communities together. She is a founding member of The Descendants of Holocaust Survivors in Central Texas, lifetime director of the Texas Association of Homebuilders and the National Association of Homebuilders, and past president of both the National Association of Remodelers Industry and the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Lucy attended Temple University in Philadelphia. She resides in Austin, Texas. This program is free and open to the public but advanced registration is required. To register, click here. 

Echoes & Reflections | Humanizing History at Sites of Memory   View Event

  • Description:  Developed by the USC Shoah Foundation, Virtual IWalks are a unique multimedia educational experience that contextualizes and humanizes the history at sites of memory by using testimony, photographs and maps to engage students. Virtual IWalks in IWitness deepen student learning through guided questions, whose results can be assessed by educators. In this webinar, Sedda Antekelian, Senior Learning and Development from the USC Shoah Foundation and Jennifer Goss, Project Director at Echoes & Reflections will present examples of Virtual IWalks and strategies for how they can be used to further student understanding of the power of memory, place and space.   • Description:  GENEROUSLY PRESENTED BY: THE ACKERMAN CENTER FOR HOLOCAUST STUDIES AT UTD We’ve all heard of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, but most people have no idea how widespread and prevalent Jewish resistance to Nazi barbarism was. Instead, it’s widely believed “Jews went to their deaths like sheep to the slaughter.” Filmed in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Israel, and the U.S., Resistance – They Fought Back provides a much-needed corrective to this myth of Jewish passivity. There were uprisings in ghettos large and small, rebellions in death camps, and thousands of Jews fought Nazis in the forests. Even in concentration camps, Jews resisted the Nazi plan of annihilation by protecting their dignity and resisting, including through violent uprisings in multiple death camps.
